A Local Icon Reimagined: Hotel El Roblar Returns to Ojai

In the heart of downtown Ojai, a century-old treasure is making its grand return. After years of quiet and a painstaking restoration, Hotel El Roblar is now open once again and looking better than ever.

Originally opened in 1919 and long known as Ojai’s oldest standing hotel, El Roblar has always been more than just a place to stay. It’s a landmark of early California elegance, a centerpiece of community history, and a love letter to the valley’s signature Spanish Revival style.

From Tavern to Timeless Classic

El Roblar’s story began in the early 20th century under the name The Ojai Tavern, later evolving into The Ojai Valley Inn before officially becoming Hotel El Roblar—a name inspired by the Spanish word for “oak grove,” a nod to the white oaks that grace the valley floor.

On its opening night in January 1920, despite a few missing furnishings, guests were welcomed with Southern style fried chicken, cream of green pea soup, and peach pie. It set the tone for a century of gracious hospitality and timeless charm.

The Architecture That Shaped a Town

Designed in the Spanish Revival style with stucco walls, arched corridors, and red tiled roofs, El Roblar reflects the architectural vision that philanthropist Edward Drummond Libbey dreamed up for Ojai, a cohesive romantic village rooted in early California beauty. Over the years, it evolved into a renowned wellness retreat before falling quiet following the 2017 Thomas Fire. But its bones remained intact. And now, they’ve been brought beautifully back to life.

What’s New (and What’s Been Lovingly Preserved)

The restoration focused on honoring the hotel’s past while introducing thoughtful modern touches. Original tile work and the lobby fireplace were carefully preserved. The color palette, textures, and handcrafted details feel like a conversation between decades.

Now home to 50 thoughtfully designed rooms including private bungalows and a brand new Sycamore House, El Roblar also features a serene pool beneath the Topa Topa mountains, a lush walled garden, and two onsite dining experiences from Chef Brandon Boudet: Condor Bar, offering modern Mexican cuisine, and a guest-only café for breakfast and lunch.

There’s also The Mariposa Ballroom, with its hand carved mural of Ojai’s natural wonders lovingly restored as an unforgettable event space.

Why It Matters TO US

Ojai is a place we hold close, known for its creative spirit, connection to nature, and strong sense of community. Hotel El Roblar is a reflection of all three. It’s equal parts heritage, hospitality, and hometown pride.
